With two misdemeanor charges, what doors are shut?
I had aspirations to go to Stanford Law in about two years, and I would have hoped to have a job long before then. However, due to unfortunate events, I have a criminal record, one count for possesion of illegal fire works, and one for shoplifting, both of which are the class one I believe. (Like, whatever the lowest level of severity is.) I'm suffering from severe anxiety, to the point where my para-sympathetic (Fight and flight-panic attack) mental state is being activated by ever hearing various triggered words. So, I need to know. Right now, I'm 18, about to turn 19. Should I give up hope on college? What things in life should I prepare to be rejected from? What are some doors that I shouldn't even try opening? Please help as best you can.., Thanks.., (NOTE: I didn't know that fire crackers were illegal in Mesa AZ. That's that charge...) When all of it happened, I was 18. An adult...

i'm assuming these law breaking events happened when your were a minor (under the age of 18)...well your juvenille record is closed to background checks. NEway, dude, these offenses are really small. Go to college. Lets put it this way...if you don't got to college and get a Bachelor's degree...then yes these events could haunt you into adulthood. If you go to college and get a 4 year degree they will not haunt you into adulthood b/c your employer is going to look at as "youthful fun". You went to college and got your act together. If you don't go to college then your employer's are going to look at it as "possible deliliquent."

Dude chill out, misdemeanors will hold you back from NOTHING. Be worried if you had a felony. BTW, if this all happened when you were a minor, then your record will be sealed anyway. Even if it was not your record will not hold you back.. Calm down and take a breathe.

Your young... get healed now, start by accepting yourself and living in the moment, and get some counselling. You should stop considering the limits and rejection and change this to the possibilities and opportunities.

your nerves tell me college might not be the best choice anyhow until you get a handle on them

First off, if you want to go to law school then you need to go to college first. And if you want to go to Standford Law (GO BEARS!) then you will have to do very well in college and take the LSAT. That said, there is nothing about a couple of misdos that will prevent you from having a successful life and even get into law school. Hell, it might even help you if you write about it in your admissions letter and how it helped you blah, blah, blah. Make sure you complete probation and try to get the cases expunged (call your attorney or the Probation Department about this one). Good luck! BTW...I am a lawyer and know many other lawyers. EVERYONE I know will tell you not to go to law school. Practicing law is not what it appears to be.

Greg....take a deep breath and relax. Life isn't over just yet. First of all...you didn't specify what kind of law you were going into. For sake of argument...I will assume you wish to be an attorney? The charges you mentioned will not stop you from becoming an attorney or being accepted to a state bar if you pass the bar exam. Ok? If you decide to go into law enforcement, the charges most likely will exclude from federal agencies like the FBI, CIA, DOJ and even Federal Marshal's Office. They have extremely rigid guidelines and your background investigation will encompass your juvenile history. There are so many areas of law you can go into Greg. So, don't be too quick to rule out law as a career. Many agencies can be forgiving of youthful indiscretions. Words that have become "glitch" words for you need to be "rerouted" in your mind. Only YOU can do that with some diligence. I suggest you try some self subliminal conditioning. Pick a thought you want to embed in your mind to replace the glitch words/phrases that trigger a panic attack. Here's how it works: You hear "Greg has record, life is ruined". You change that to "MY life is not ruined, I WILL succeed". Write the sentence on a piece of paper minimum 10 times at each setting...3 x's a day. After about 30 days the positive phrase has/is replacing the negative triggers. As you write the positive sentence also verbalize it with conviction. What you are in essence doing is making your mind, hand, voice and eyes work in concert with each other which brings about better results than if you just spew a few words. You HAVE to write it, you HAVE to verbalize it to get it implanted in the brain. Subliminal conditioning is an exercise I've used with a lot of clients to re-channel their negative thoughts into positive thoughts. Trust me...it works. Greg...by all means go to college. There isn't much out there that pays much if you don't have a college degree. Study your butt off, keep your nose clean and think positive. Life doesn't really start till you are out of college anyway. All the teen stuff is just practice for when you become a viable, working, career minded adult. Trust me...been there done it and some reeeeeally stupid mistakes myself. Chin up kiddo...you don't need a panic disorder at your young age. Best of luck to you Greg............:)
